Ventrilo is divded into two different parts. The first part is the Server which you won't have to worry about unless you chose to host the chat yourself. The server doesn't have a GUI and it can get kinda hairy if you've never done it before.

With the key is it fairly easy to learn though. I think Aranyic is going to have a Ventrilo server running on his server that we can all connect to so no one should have to set up their own.

The second part of Ventrilo is the Client part. This is what you will all need to download and install in order to connect to the server and chat. This part has a GUI with a myriad of configuration options. Don't let this scare you though because for the most part you'll only need to configure a few basic things to get rolling. So anyhoo lets get started. After that there is your typical install wizard to get the client on your computer and you'll be ready to move onto configuring your client.

The first thing you should see when starting Ventrilo is an interface with boxes for a User Name, Server, and Bindings. All you really need to do here is select the new button, type in whatever name you would like, and then click ok. In the phonetic section you can type your name phonetically so that whenever you enter a channel a computer voice will announce your arrival.

The description is also optional and I wouldn't worry about the "Work Dir" field. After this is done you now have a user profile that you can use in any Ventrilo server. You can have multiple profiles if you like as well. Just follow the same steps to make another.

Profiles can be switched via a dropdown box on the client's main menu. For now we will skip the server box as it is not needed right now and move onto configuration. From my experiences with Ventrilo configuration consist mainly of fine tuning your microphone sensitivity. There is no password for the pdgaming ventrilo. Click on the "New" button and input a name for what you want your bind to be called. Mine is called "Sprinkler". Now hold your mouse over where it says "Bind key" and press the key you wish to use to activate this bind.

This will make it so ventrilo will say what you put in for the phonetic. The numbers should display anything besides zero or 'Abs Zero' when speaking. In Vent setup click the "Test" button. Speak into the mic, using either voice-activation or PTT, and the box should display --Begin-- when you start and --End-- when you pause. The program will then playback what was spoken. The manufacturer is responsible for maintaining the proper version of driver for their specific hardware. For example: Realtek is an OEM manufacturer of audio chips and there are many different revisions of each.

Realtek comments to this effect on their download page. Windows provides a method to start an application using a shortcut key or a combo shortcut key.

For example, you don't want to alt-tab to the desktop from your game in order to start Ventrilo. Right-click on the desktop icon and select "Properties". The window should display the "Shortcut" tab. Copy the information from the "Target" box and paste in the "Start in:" box.

Next select the shortcut key. Try to use a key combination that either the game or other running applications will not recognize. Set the "Run:" option to "Minimized". Note: this option is currently not recognized and will be addressed in a later release. Setting this option will prevent the Ventrilo window from opening on top of the application which has window focus. Check the Operating System setup for language and keyboard settings.
